Established in 1967. The B.Sc in Botany covers all areas of study & scientific research involving plants. Plants & other photosynthetic organisms are the ultimate solar-powered biological systems selected by evolution. Botany involves the study of all plants, including algae (e.g. seaweeds to diatoms), mosses, ferns, gymnosperms (e.g. trees) & flowering plants (i.e. seed plants). This includes wild plants and also plants cultivated or grown by humans (e.g. crops). The study of plants also allows unique perspectives into the history and cultural evolution of societies across the globe. Students will study plants at many levels including ecosystems, communities, species, individuals, tissues, cells and molecules (e.g. genetics, biochemistry and biotechnology). From the time of Gregor Mendel to the present, many of the most exciting and leading discoveries in genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, chemistry, physiology, biodiversity and ecology have been made by plant scientists.
The department has also initiated the M.Sc Programme in Botany in the year 2015- 2016
The department is having collaboration with research institutions and agencies like Kerala Forest Research Institute, Peechi; National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources, Vellanikkara; Kerala Agricultural University, Vellanikkara; College of Forestry, Vellanikkara; National Medicinal Plant Board, Trivandrum; M. S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, Community Agro-biodiversity Centre, Wynad etc., where the students are free to visit and do their project work with expert advice.
The key objective of this course is to promote environmental awareness among the student population as well as in the society in an interesting and informative way. We are actively pursuing this by organizing lectures, talks, discussions, walks, film shows, field trips and other events that are of a botanical nature. Our events are both educational and enjoyable for those who share a botanical interest.
The completion of these courses enables and equips the student to opt for higher studies in any of the following areas.
Government Organizations that provide oppurtunities for M.Sc Botany Graduates are:
In addition to the conventional teaching methods, the students are involved in participatory learning activities like,
Lectures cum awareness programmes to the public on topics like
Apart from classroom teaching, seminars, debates, discussions and workshops are held for the students. Charts, OHP, LCD- Internet and other innovative teaching aids are also employed for the study. Modern technologies are introduced by visiting research organizations and acquaintance with experts in relevant areas.
The department include 4 regular faculty members and 4 guest lecturers who are efficient teachers with excellent academic backgrounds. Minor research projects funded by UGC is completed by two of our faculty members. Research projects for B.Sc students are also carried out in related disciplines.
