To produce professionally trained sociologists with social sensitivity and commitment.
The inculcation of the spirit of “society” among the young women through theoretical, empirical and participatory learning.
Sociology is the latest and most interesting discipline among all the existing social science. It was born in 1838 only, so it is 170 year old discipline. Despite being such a new discipline, it has become the most significant subject among all the social sciences. Principles of sociology are now taught to the student of all the major professional or vocational courses. Sociology as an independent social science though was born in the West in the 19th century; it came to India as an academic study only in the 20th century. A separate department of sociology and civics was started in the Bombay University in 1919. In Kerala, the subject was introduced at the University of Kerala in 1962 as an undergraduate programme and in the year 1924; a postgraduate course.
Department of sociology started in Vimala College, Thrissur in 1967 by shifting the first batch of sociology students from St. Mary’s College to Vimala College. It was a humble beginning with 35 students under the headship of Prof. Sr. Samuel MA, MSW. Then it was a bold step to start BA degree in Sociology – since this unique subject was unfamiliar and even unknown to many in those days. Now the department has developed and attained a very high status in its academic excellence.
The post graduate degree in sociology started in Vimala College in 2002 due to the continuous demand of the students who aspired for higher education in this particular discipline. Thirteen batches are passed out meritoriously.
