Library as learning resource

The Institution has a well equipped and fully automated centralized library.

The On line Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) is used for the display of existing books. There is open access to the library which is fully automated with the LIBSOFT package. The LIBSOFT has modules for managing the library accessories, information retrieval, reservation, membership and statistics. It offers the facility of swiping for the library user statistics. The N-LIST programme of the INFLIBNET Centre of Vimala College Library provides access to more than 2100 e-journals and more than 51000 e-books. Besides, there are 1500 e-books in the library collection. Greenstone is used as a federated searching tool for articles. There is provision of ILL (Inter Library Loan Service) from other Institutions. Through the library website www.vimalalibrary.libsoft.org one can also access the Web OPAC. In house access to e-publications is limited to areas with internet access.

The librarian meets all newcomers and briefs them about the rules and regulations of the library

All students are given user orientation

A library club comprising students from different batches is constituted to intensify the use of library, to read, discuss and be aware of the latest arrivals. At present there are  200 active members in this club

Library has an annual newsletter entitled “Echoes”

Book exhibition is conducted every year

Provides space to display student articles and book reviews

Conducts  feedback to improve the  functioning and resources

Each library user is provided a library cum photo identity card with bar coding which is swiped at the entrance

The new arrivals of books in the library are displayed on a revolving rack.

Award has been instituted  for the best library user

Library Advisory Committee serves as the coordinating and policy making body which functions as a buffer agency and interpreter of the needs of the library to the authorities. A qualified librarian and a team of 6 supportive staff are behind the efficient management of the library. The Library Committee is constituted of the Principal, Librarian, Heads of PG Departments, a faculty as library coordinator, and student representatives.

The library is open on all working days and Saturdays. The working hours of the library are from 8 am to 5 pm on working days.

Specialized Services Provided by the Library include, Reference, Reprography, ILL (Inter Library Loan Service), Printing ,Reading list / bibliography compilation,In house / remote access to e-resources including  Braille materials also, etc..

Special Facility for the Visually/ Physically Challenged

            Vimala College Library subscribes Open Book software for blind students. The support staffs in the library provide all assistance to the differently able students to make optimum use of the library.

The library collects the feedback from its users through a structured questionnaire and suggestion box. Collected information is scrutinized, coded and the coded information is transferred to the computer and analyzed through statistical techniques (percentage, average.) Based on the findings of the analysis, measures are taken for further improvements.
