             About              

   The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) under the Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt. of India, over the past 30 years, has given a new impetus to the developments in modern biology and biotechnology. The DBT is supporting undergraduate science education in the country under “Star College Scheme” and there has been considerable change in the scenario of basic science education. The Star College Scheme was initiated by DBT in 2008 to support colleges and universities offering undergraduate education to improve science teaching across the country.

   Vimala College (Autonomous), Thrissur is sanctioned  DBT STAR College Scheme in 2019 to Six Science Departments, Botany, Zoology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Statistics. Six departments conducted around 40 webinars in national and international levels for the UG students in 2020-21 and two FDP to strengthen our faculty. Also E tendered the Laboratory instruments, chemical and glasswares to the sanctioned departments.

   The college envisions the Star College Scheme initiated by the DBT, Govt of India, as a tremendous opportunity for providing quality education in Science that would profoundly alter the structure of scientific practice itself. The very process of compiling this application helped us chisel to finesse the institutional objectives for Science education, which we have categorized into three heads: Firstly, education for women has become a priority in the world over considering various aspects like empowerment, enlightenment and progress. Yet, the visible presence of women of eminence in science is still sparse and demands focused attention, motivation and promotion. Vimala being a College for women, with 8 Science departments offering 10 programmes that have consistently recorded outstanding academic performance, the promotion of various aspects relating to Science is sure to bolster and carve brilliant minds.
