The Degree Course in B.Sc. Statistics was launched at Vimala College, Thrissur in the year 1981 under the Department of Statistics, affiliated to the University of Calicut. The Department flourished under Smt. E.K.Soudamini who was the founder Head of the Department. The complementary courses provided were Mathematics and Mathematical Economics with Statistics as the core course. The Department achieved greater heights with the assiduous work of eminent teachers like Dr. Sr. Alice Thomas, Smt. Annamma C.C., Smt. Annamma Thachil and Dr. Sherly Sebastian. The department celebrated its Silver Jubilee in the year 2006-07.

The curriculum was restructured and ‘Choice Based Credit Semester System’ was introduced in 2009. The department library was inaugurated in 2011. VISTAA Computer lab I was launched in 2014. The college introduced Autonomy in the year 2016.  M.Sc. Statistics (self financing) programme started in the academic year 2020-21. VISTAA and DBT-Star college scheme sponsored computer lab II was launched in 2021. By 2018 the students of the department bagged with 70 university ranks, in which 11 batches secured the first 3 ranks. 40 batches graduated from the department till 2022.

In 2014 the department was able to take great strides as the UGC sponsored National seminar on “Applications of Mathematics in Statistics” was organized which was followed by the commencement of UGC Sponsored Add-on course “Statistical Computing using data analysis”. “VISTA 2K16 Statistics Exhibition” was organized in 2016. In the year 2018-19, we have collaborated with the department of computer science in starting a PG Diploma course in Data Science. Also, we have signed a MoU with Networkz Systems Ltd, Thrissur, to enhance the student's e-knowledge with hands-on training. Currently, the Department is supported under the DBT-Star College Scheme. The Department is headed by Dr. Divya P.R., supported by a dedicated team of four permanent faculties, Dr. Jismi Mathew, Dr. Jerin Paul, Dr. Preethi John and Dr. Anamiya Baby and Ms. Mariaya Jeeja P V and Dr. Sajana O K.
