Department of Botany

The department was established in 1967 with B.Sc Course in Botany. We have initiated the M.Sc Programme in Botany in the year 2015-2016.  The department is having collaboration with research institutions and agencies like Kerala Forest Research Institute, Peechi; National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources, Vellanikkara; Kerala Agricultural University, Vellanikkara; College of Forestry, Vellanikkara; National Medicinal Plant Board, Trivandrum; M. S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, Community Agro-biodiversity Centre, Wynad; KSCSTE, Thiruvananthapuram, where the students are free to visit and do their project work with expert advice. The B.Sc in Botany covers all areas of study and scientific research involving plants. The study of plants also allows unique perspectives into the history and cultural evolution of societies across the globe. Students will study plants at many levels including ecosystems, communities, species, individuals, tissues, cells and molecules. A good number of students of this department have been graduated from this college and well established in the society.
At present the department has four regular faculty members and 4 guest faculties who are efficient teachers with excellent academic backgrounds. Minor research projects funded by UGC are completed by two of our faculty members. Research projects for B.Sc students are also carried out in related disciplines. We also have two supporting staff. After completion of B.Sc. Degree, students can opt for Post graduation in Botany or any other higher studies.  Some students have completed their M.Phil. and Ph.D. degree; and few are doing post-doctoral research. Many of our alumnae have cleared national level competitive examinations such as CSIR-NET, JRF, GATE, CAT and so on and are working in various fields including education, industry, research, and agriculture as well.
