The Degree Course in B.Sc. Statistics was launched at Vimala College, Thrissur in the year 1981 under the Department of Statistics, affiliated to the University of Calicut. The Department flourished under Prof. E.K.Soudamini who was the founder head of the department. The complementary courses provided were Mathematics and Mathematical Economics with Statistics as the core course. The Department achieved greater heights with the assiduous work of eminent teachers like Dr. Sr. Alice Thomas, Smt. Annamma Thachil and Dr. Sherly Sebastian. The department celebrated its Silver Jubilee in the year 2006-07. The 25th batch of the department, which graduated in 2007-08 brought laurels to the department by securing the first three University ranks. The curriculum was restructured and ‘Choice Based Credit Semester System’ was introduced in 2009. The department library was inaugurated in 2011, which offers 200 books and journals. VISTAA Computer lab was launched in 2014. In the same year department was able to take great strides as UGC sponsored National seminar on “Applications of Mathematics in Statistics” was organized which was followed by the commencement of UGC Sponsored Add-on course “Statistical Computing using data analysis”. In the year 2018-19, we have collaborated with the department of computer science in starting a PG Diploma course in Data Science. M.Sc. Statistics (self-financing) programme started in the  in the academic year 2020-21 and currently, the Department is supported under the DBT-Star College Scheme.The Department is headed by Dr.Jismi Mathew, supported by a dedicated team of four permanent faculties  along with four guest faculties.
