Reading Week Celebration
To cultivate the love for reading science books, reading week was observed during 21-27 June 2021 by the name “Reading through VIGNETTES in PHYSICS”. It was an impressive collection on diverse topics in Physics by G Venkataraman, targeting mainly the young minds to arouse curiosity and to prepare them for serious study of Physics.
Day 1 (21-06-2021)
The chief guest of the inaugural session was Dr Harikrishnan G, Associate Professor, Government College, Madappally. Dr Harikrishnan G gave a talk introducing the books in the series on Physics by G Venkataraman.
Day 2 (22-06-2021) WHY ARE THINGS THE WAY THEY ARE? – Reviewed by Olivia Sunny of PG 2nd Year. This book attempts to understand the basic properties of matter and translates the technical jargon of physics into a language that can be understood by anyone with an interest in science who wants to know why the world around us behaves |
Day 3 (23-06-2021) A HOT STORY - Reviewed by Sherin Rose Soji of UG 3rd Year. This book attempts to explain the terms heat and temperature. But instead of relying mainly on technical explanations that are highly mathematical, the author takes a look at what really lies behind these phenomena. |

Day 4 (24-06-2021) CHANDRASEKHAR AND HIS LIMIT- Reviewed by Soniya Jojo of PG 2nd Year. It is a heartwarming and very inspiring story about Subrahmanyam Chandrasekhar, the distinguished mathematical physicist India has produced. This book concentrates on the discovery of the Chandrasekhar Limit. |
Day 5 (25-06-2021) The Many Phases of Matter - Reviewed by Aleena Joy of UG 3rd Year. This book is about phase transitions. It seeks to unfold the universal connecting link between diverse physical phenomena, all involving a change of state. |

Day 6 (26-06-2021) Bose and His Statistics- Reviewed by Anjana R of UG 2nd Year. This book describes a monumental discovery made by Satyendranath Bose. It also helps the reader take a step closer to understanding Bose, the scientist and describes the events that surround this exciting discovery. |
Day 7 (27-06-2021) Raman and His Effect- Reviewed by Aparna R of UG 2nd Year. This book deals with the famous Scattering Effect discovered by Sir C.V. Raman. It gives us deep insights into the character of this famous scientist and vividly describes the circumstances surrounding the discovery. |
THEJUS - World students’ day celebration
The Post Graduate and Research Department of Physics Vimala College celebrated World Students’ Day as Thejus 2021 commemorating the birthday of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. The Resource Person was Dr Anurose T J, Scientist D, National Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India. The talk was very informative and inspiring. Dr Anurose explained the basic concepts and techniques used in weather forecasting. She also dealt with the opportunities available for students after post-graduation in Physics. Many students interacted with her on related topics.
National Energy Conservation Day
On 14th December 2021, the national energy conservation day was observed. Dr K Soman, President, Energy Conservation Society, Kerala, gave an invited talk creating awareness of the need and ways of energy conservation. A pledge to conserve energy was also taken. An online awareness quiz on energy conservation was also conducted.
Industry-Academia interface: Familiarization of Digital CRO and Optic Fibre Characterization
Department of Physics organized hands-on training and interaction with industrial experts in association with Prominent Thrissur on 1 December 2021. Mr Anoop R, Managing Partner, Prominent was the resource person. He demonstrated the working of Digital CRO and provided ideas on various troubleshooting and measuring methods. In the next session, the resource person demonstrated the Optic Fibre Characterization technique and the experimental setup. First and second-year MSc students attended the session. Department purchased a new digital CRO and Optic Fibre Characterization setup.
National Science Day
Talk on ‘Integrated approach in science and technology for a sustainable future by Er. G Krishnakumar, chief operating officer –Society of Energy Engineers and Managers (SEEM), on 19 February 2022 in association with the Institution’s Innovation Council.
Constitution Day
The constitution day message was delivered by Ms J Anuja, associate professor and head of the Department of Political Science. On that day, the preamble of the constitution of India was read out and repeated by the audience.
Regional Workshop on LATEX for Documentation
A two-day regional workshop on “LATEX for Documentation” was organized by Post Graduate and Research Department of Physics, Vimala College (Autonomous) Thrissur on 17th and 20th of March 2021 under the financial assistance from DBT Star College scheme, (Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt of India). The online workshop was hosted on Google Meet platform.
Dr. Shaju K Y, Vice Principal, Associate Professor & Head, Department of Physics, Christ College (Autonomous), Irinjalakuda was the resource person. Ms. Rasmi Sivadas, research scholar of the Department, welcomed the resource person and the participants to the workshop. On day 1, the speaker familiarized the usage of LATEX for the purpose of documentation to the participants. The students were made to do each syntax, place comments, fonts and formatting styles simultaneously along with the resource person. A break for 10 minutes was given at 1:50 pm and the session resumed at 2 pm. The session for day 1 ended at 03:00 pm.
On day 2, the session began at 10:00 am. The way in which equations are typed, operators are put into text, aligning a document before print, etc. were shared with the students. After the session, a discussion for about 30 minutes helped the students clear their queries on various topics handled throughout the two-day workshop. Ms. Deepthi Ann Vadakkan of S2 M.Sc Physics officially proposed vote of thanks for the entire session. The informal interaction between students and the resource person continued and the moderator Dr. Jovia Jose winded up the session. The Google Meet session concluded at 12:20 pm.
A five-day workshop series “JAM 2021” was organized by the Department of Physics, Vimala College (Autonomus) Thrissur in the month of December 2020 in association with SM Physics Academy under the financial assisiatnce from DBT Star College scheme, (Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt of India). The resource person was Dr. P Sethumadhavan, Former HoD of Physics, Sree Narayana Guru College, Chelannur, Calicut.
The virtual sessions on google meet extended for three hours per day. Students who were preparing for JAM 2021 to be held in February 2021 were given a training on how to approach the exam, how to prepare under each category in the question paper and how much stress is to be given on various topics of Physics. The problem discussions were followed by online mode exams and solving problems in diverse topics of Physics. Thirty final year students participated in the workshop. A feedback form was circulated at the end to the participants for them to fill in their opinion about the session.
A session on ‘Origami -Recycling of paper’ was conducted by Mr. Ramesh Rai, Vidyamandir Training Center, Pali, Jaipur, Rajasthan for third year B.Sc students
An international symposium on “Creation without a creator: Stephen Hawking on Science Religion Interfacing” was organized by Science religion club of Vimala college in collaboration with Department of Physics, Vimala College on 12/2/2019.The symposium was sponsored by SCIO, Oxford, UK and IISR New Delhi. Prof Dr. Kathleen Duffy, SSJ(Head, Department of Physics, Chestnut College, Philadelphia, USA), Prof Dr Job Kozhamthadam(Director, IISER Delhi)and Prof Dr Babu Joseph(Former Vice-chancellor, Cochin University) shared their ideas on the following topics.
Prof Dr. Kathleen Duffy, SSJ discussed on “ The Marvel of creation and the need for a creator: The perspective of Teilhard de Chardin on creation and evolution”. Prof Dr Job Kozhamthadam shared ideas about “Creation without a creator: Hawkings on Science and Religion Interfacing”. The final session was handled by Prof Dr Babu Joseph on the topic Quantum Theology.
Students are getting opportunities to interact with former students. Veena Balakrishnan, former degree student interacted with degree students on 21/06/2018. She has completed her Post Graduation from NIT Trichy and currently pursuing Ph.D. from University of Oklahoma, Norman, USA. Anju K (Research Scholar, CUSAT) interacted with the degree students on 07/07/2018
National Science Day Celebration arranged on 26th February 2019. The focal theme was Communicating Science to all. Dr. Shaji N, Former Principal, TM Jacob Memorial Government College, Manimalakunnu was the resource person. He delivered a talk on what is Science and what is not Science.
A three-day workshop on “Conceptual and Mathematical Structure of Quantum Mechanics” was conducted at Vimala College from 12th to 14th of August 2017 for college and university teachers. The workshop was a joint venture of the department with Academy of Physics Teachers (APT) Kerala. Forty five teachers of various colleges from Kerala, Tamilnadu and Pondicherry attended the event.
Dr. S.V.M. Satyanarayana (Professor, Pondicherry University) was the resource person. Mr. Joseph Prabhagar of Loyola College, Chennai handled the tutorial sessions. Dr. K A Malini was the local co-ordinator of the program. Principal Dr. Sr. Mariette A Therattil interacted with participants and appreciated the initiatives of APT and physics teachers for creating platforms for upgrading the knowledge of teachers through interactions with veterans in the field
Ms. RakhiSankar and Ms.Sreelakshmi. T of third sem B.Sc. Physics interacted with students about their experience at the summer internship programme at IISER Trivandrum supported by KSCSTE from June 19 to 23, 2017. The y shared the information from talks by eminent scientists and also detailed the visits to NIST Trivandrum, Rajiv Gandhi Institute of biotechnology and IISER campus at Vidhura. They aummarised the scope for higher studies as integrated Ph.D at institutions like IISER
A three day workshop on Lagrangian dynamics organized by Association of Physics Teachers was conducted at Vimala College on 13/08/16 to 15/08/16 in association with Academy of Physics Teachers ( APT) Kerala. 29 teachers of various colleges from Kerala, Thamilnadu and Pondicherry attended the program. Dr. S.V.M. Satyanarayana (Pondichery University) was the resource person. Mr Joseph Prabhagar of Layola College Chennai handled the tutorial sessions. Dr K A Malini was the local co-ordinator of the program.
Department of Physics organized a two day KSCSTE co-sponsored National Seminar on Recent Advancements in Photonics in honour of Dr. Sr. Ritty J Nedumpara on 14-15 February 2017. Dr. V Kumar, Scientist F, C-MET Thrissur inaugurated the Seminar and his inaugural address was followed by invited talks on topics related to Photonics.
There were oral and poster paper presentations on related topics. Ms. Anju Paulson, Research student of the Department of Physics, University of Calicut secured the best paper award. Sr. Ritty J Nedumpara was honoured by her guide Prof. P Radakrishnan and other teachers from various colleges who were contemporaries to sister during the period of her education and research.
A platform for interaction between academically talented former students and the existing students was given to inspire the students for higher education in Physics and motivate them for participate in competitive Examinations .The former students of the Department Sreelekshmi and Ansu (NIT winners), Veena Balakrishnan shared their experience with the students
