A National webinar on “Stars, Galaxies and Beyond…” was organized by Post Graduate Department of Physics, Vimala College (Autonomus) Thrissur on 12th March 2021 under the financial assisiatnce from DBT Star College scheme, (Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt of India). It was a virtual meeting through google meet. The programme started off with the welcome speech by Ms. P Athira Unni, S4 student. The webinar was lead by the resource person, Prof. (Dr.) Annapurni Subramaniam. It was a 2 hour session. More than 50 students (UG) participated. It was an explanatory and informative session, where students interacted, asked questions and cleared their doubts. The vote of thanks was delivered by Ms. Havva Hyrath K, S6 student. Student coordinators were Aswath M and Ritzy Rose. A feedback form was circulated at the end to the participants for them to fill in their opinion about the session.
National Webinar on Computations in physics: history, current status and future perspectives

The webinar was hosted on the Google Meet platform. A talk on ‘Computations in physics: history, current status and future perspectives’ was organized as a part of National Science day on 27th of February 2021. The Head of the Department, Dr Malini K A welcomed the resource person and the participants to the webinar. The resource person of the webinar was Dr M P Gururajan, Associate Professor, Department of Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science, IIT Bombay. The speaker spoke about the rich history of computational physics and the various models dealt in the field and how it is used for research purposes. The session ended at 04:45 pm and was followed by a discussion and interaction for nearly 15 minutes. The resource person answered the queries raised by the participants.

A webinar on “Permanent Magnets : Current and Future Perspectives” was organized by Post Graduate and Research Department of Physics, Vimala College (Autonomus) Thrissur on 16th of December 2020 under the financial assisiatnce from DBT Star College scheme, (Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt of India). The online workshop was hosted on Zoom platform.Dr. Senoy Thomas, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics, CUSAT was the resource person.
Dr. Malini K A, Assistant professor, Department of Physics, welcomed the resource person and the participants to the workshop. The speaker familiarized the world of magnetic materials, the fundamentals underlying magnetic properties of materials and current research avenues in the field. The session came to an end by 11:30 am and was followed by a discussion for about 45 minutes in which the resource person addressed the questions posed by the participants. Ms. Sreelakshmi Jayaprakash of S4 B.Sc Physics officially proposed vote of thanks for the entire session. The informal interaction between students and the resource person continued and the moderator Dr. Veena Gopalan E winded up the session. The Google Meet session concluded at 12:10 pm. Regional Webinar on Energy Conservation for Sustainable Living

The webinar was hosted on the ZOOM platform. A talk on ‘Energy Conservation for sustainable living’ was organized as a part of National Energy conservation day on 14th of December 2020 in connection with the inauguration of the Vimala Energy Management Centre (VEMC). The Head of the Department, Dr Malini K A welcomed the resource person and the participants to the webinar. The resource person of the webinar was Shri. Azeem K, Cofounder Alenso Energy.
The speaker dealt in detail the various aspects of energy conservation in his talk. He explained in detail the need for switching over to energy efficient lighting. He also stressed on having a change in a lifestyle which is centered on the principles of conserving energy. He also discussed the importance of using energy efficient appliances with BEE certifications and also made students aware of how to effectively handle gas stoves during cooking. The session ended at 11:30 am and was followed by a discussion and interaction for nearly 30 minutes. The resource person answered the queries raised by the participants. The online workshop was hosted on Google Meet platform. Dr. Raju Panthagani, Associate Professor, Geethanjali College of Engineering and Technology (GCET), Hyderabad was the resource person. Dr. Dhanya Johnson, Assistant professor, Department of Physics, welcomed the resource person and the participants to the workshop. The workshop was aimed at acquainting the faculty and students with online virtual laboratories, which is of great significance nowadays especially in the context of covid-19 pandemic. Dr.Raju Panthagani started the session by introducing the website - www.tinkercad.com wherein one can build virtual circuits and perform experiments on them. He demonstrated these steps by building a simple LED circuit to start with and then moved on to more complex circuits like CE and CB configuration, zener diode, half wave and full wave rectifiers etc. A free plotting software- Magic plot was also introduced. The speaker then introduced a second website www.falstad.com which could also be used for virtual electronic experiments. The session came to an end by 11:15 AM and was followed by a discussion for about 45 minutes in which the resource person addressed the questions posed by the participants. National Workshop on X-ray Diffraction: Good Analytical Practices

The webinar was hosted on the Google Meet platform. Due to technical glitches, the webinar started half an hour behind the schedule. The coordinator Dr. Mini Krishna K welcomed the resource person and the participants to the webinar. The speaker started the session by explaining the various criteria for good quality diffraction data. He then discussed in detail the factors affecting the accuracy and precision of results, which includes the contributions from the sample, instrument, sample preparation errors and data analysis errors. The effect of particle size on the diffraction data was discussed and the methods to minimize the errors from sample preparation were suggested. Various diffractometer geometries were introduced and the importance of suitable optics on the characterization process was explained. Data analysis was discussed on the basis of comparison with the standard databases and profile fitting methods. Towards the end the speaker familiarized the participants to the vital parts of a latest good quality spectrometer in their laboratory. The session ended at 1:10 pm and was followed by a discussion and interaction for nearly 20 minutes. The resource person answered the queries raised by the participants.

The speaker dealt in detail the theory and instrumentation part of X-ray diffraction in the first half of the talk. He said that the selection of the filters to the detector was very much relevant in the whole process of capturing a well-defined diffraction pattern. In the second half, a live demonstration of the parts of an X-ray spectrometer instrument at STIC was performed by the resource person. He also demonstrated the various features that can be read out from the results obtained after a diffraction analysis. The session ended at 12:40 pm and was followed by a discussion and interaction for nearly 15 minutes. The resource person answered the queries raised by the participants.
Towards the end, our Principal Dr. Sr. Beena Jose and the College Co-ordinator of DBT STAR Scheme Dr. Sr Jeena joined the webinar. Principal congratulated the department on this maiden endeavor.
